CEK5223 Special Lecture on Korean Thought of I-Ching 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 - No
I-ching is the most important cannon of thought in the Chinese culture. This course tries to understand the relationship between the I-ching thought and Korean thoughts.
CEK5224 Studies in Korean Philosophy of Ancient and Medieval 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 Korean Yes
In this course students at first examine the historical texts of the original Korean thoughts that suggest us to consider the origin of Confucianism as old Korean blood, Dong-i. The texts to be read include the Sam-kuk-yu-sa and the Sam-kuk-sa-ki, the earliest texts providing informations of old Korean thoughts and the rise of Confucianism in Korea. On this basis, students are required to understand the rise of Neo-Confucianism in late Koryo and the fruits resulted from the studies of Korean scholars, especially those eminent; Toegye and Yulgok, and the practical learning of Chosun, Sil-hak. Students may broaden the discussions to seek for the modern application of traditional Korean thoughts and their appropriate transformations to be fit to the rapidly changing modern society.

Taking this course, you can understand the current of thoughts in the early Chosun era by considering the development of Neo-Confucianism and comparing the philosophical thoughts of Kwanhak School and Sarim school. Also, This course purposes to understand the current of thoughts in the middle and late Chosun era by studying the threads of thoughts in Li-xue, Yangmingak, and Silhak, the developed forms of Neo-Confucianism after the middle Chousun ages.

This course offers the paradigm of the development of the practical learning in late Chosun with readings of sayings and writings of some important thinkers for students to understand the spirit of the Korean practical learning, notably 'utilise the reality and seek for the truth.' In this course, students are also expected to investigate the relatedness of the practical learning and the attitude objecting the foreign culture and power to understand the practicality of Confucianism.

We research the process of settling down of confucianism in the era of the three Kingdoms, and its relation to ‘Dong-ee culture We analyze the ignificance and function of Confucianism in the era of three Kingdoms and Koryo through which we figure out uniqueness of Korean confucianism and explore the origin of Korean culture. And then, think of theorical changing process into Neo-confucianism, Duoxue, Lixue, Silhak of the Yi-dynasty and then Korea confucianism that result from mixing western culture late Yi-dynasty must be analyzed by periodical situation. The process of developing and establishing confucianism will be discussed with scholars and characteristics. The philosophy of ""Chu Hsi"" will be classified with human, cosmos,politics, etc. and examines as such. The complicated theory of philosophy of ""Chu Hsi"" will be systematically summarized. In this seminar, we will analyze the system of Neo-Confucianism and inquire into the relationship between Neo-Confucianism and East Asian culture.

This course aims to study the relationship between Zhu-xi philosophy and Korean philosophy by learning the basic theory of Zhu-xi school and reviewing the Four- Seven theory and Horak argument, which are known to be major arguments of Chosun Confucianism.

This course have three steps. First, we will learn basically about the theory of Yang-Ming philosophy, by reading the book about Wang Yang ming which is called Jeonseublok. Second, we will study Jung Je-du who was known as the representative scholar of the Wang Yangming school in Chosun, by reading his writings. Based on this, we will get an idea of the impact of Yang-Ming philosophy on Korean philosophy.
