The Confucian Classics are the primary texts that encompass the principal teachings of Confucianism and East Asian philosophy. Therefore, the study of the Confucian Classics, such as the Four Book and the Thirteen Classics, are preliminary for understanding the philosophical, political, cultural, and artistic tradition of East Asia, Accordingly, this course aims at providing basic information on the origins and formation of the Confucian Classics, their main contents, philosophical characteristics, and important implications in the development of Confucianism, as well as their contemporary relevance. This course will provide students with firm background for studying Confucianism and East Asian Philosophy in general, and also this course will prepare students for more advanced courses, such as reading primary texts of the Confucian Classics and understanding the various philosophical traditions from the Pre-Qin to the modern day.

This course deals with various philosophical and political ideas of contemporary East Asia and examines related discussions by focusing on Confucian thought. This course attempts to understand in detail the research trends and problems of so-called New Confucianism in Taiwan and Hong Kong in the 20th century and so-called Mainland New Confucianism in mainland China in the 21st century.

Through this course, students will be able to develop the self-directed skills required in today's society by combining humanistic insights with the capability to utilize digital analytical tools.

Eastern philosophy has developed a rich system of thought over centuries, shaped by the contemplations and critiques of various philosophers and schools. This course aims to explore the philosophers and ideas that have been overshadowed by mainstream, revisiting the intellectual competitions and debates of their time. Originating in ancient China, Eastern philosophy evolved from a profound interest in 'human' and 'nature,' progressing through the reasoning of ‘Confucianism’ and ‘Taoism’, Over the centuries, in the vast landscapes of the East, it absorbed diverse thoughts through continuous debates and criticisms, growing into branches like ‘Buddhism’, ‘Neo-Confucianism’.
