The core of Oriental Studies is the study on Mind(心學). Viewing the disciplinary divisions of the study, the philosophical approaches on Mind can be divided into three parts; Confucian, Buddhistic and Taoistic study on Mind. Also it can be categorized, according to the regions, as Korean, Chinese, japanese and indian study on Mind. Of these studies, especially, the most developed model is the Korean Study on Mind. And the most famous philosopher in that area is Toegye(退溪) Yi Hwang (李滉) in Korea. This class will be very useful for people in our ages to settle their own perplexed mind.

The general government in our times is democracy. Regarding that political system, however, so many people currently discuss its negative aspects and limitations. Therefore the first thing we need to do is to perceive what the essence of democracy is. And next, We have to know why socio-polotical problems are arising in that system. Finally, on the basis of these understandings, we can find the solutions for the problems which are basically produced by modern democracy. For this, it will be very meaningful for us to study Oriental political ideology. In this class, more specifically, We will carefully deal with confucian political philosophy, Which is the subcategory of Oriental political ideology. Our goal is to know whether there is a method in confucian political ideology to complement modern democratic limitations.

The Book of Poetry is a collection of ancient poems by Confucius, and the Book of Documents is a collection of ancient documents on ideal politics. Both of them belong to the Five Confucian Classics. Confucius defines poetry as the expression of pure emotions and the source of moral sentiments. The Book of Documents illuminates the moral principles of ideal politics and governance in Confucianism through the historical records of the sage king's administration.
