2022 Overseas Korean Philosophy and Culture Exchange Program Completed at the University of Foreign Studies
The 2022 Overseas Philosophy and Culture Exchange Program, prepared by the University of Foreign Studies (President Kim Dong-min) for the winter vacation, was held at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) from December 18 to December 22.
South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, called Asia's four dragons, have all achieved rapid growth since the late 20th century, and have grown to world-class levels in academic and research fields. Among them, Singapore has the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), boasting the best education and research levels in Asia. Therefore, this program was planned to introduce Korean philosophy and culture abroad, experience Singapore's world-class research level, and lay the foundation for the growth and international advancement of our students.
Hosted by Sungkyunkwan University's College of Study, Professor Park So-jung and Professor Kim Dong-min participated as lead teachers, and 20 students selected through document and interview screening among Ph.D.-level assistants, students majoring in Oriental studies, and multiple graduates participated for a total of 3 nights and 5 days. On the first day, he visited the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) on the second day, and on the last day, he completed the overseas Korean philosophy and culture program by visiting various attractions to learn Singapore's culture and history and eating local food.
At the National University of Singapore (NUS), Professor Park Mi-hee of the Department of Korean Language gave a lecture under the theme of "Teaching and Learning Korean in a Multilingual Society," and Sungkyunkwan University's students introduced Sungkyunkwan University and College of Study to students at the National University of Singapore (NUS). In addition, I had time to communicate in groups with students enrolled in the Korean language department, and visited the NUS Central Library.
Nanyang Technological University (NTU) examined the structure of the eco-friendly school and the appearance of the classroom through a campus tour. Professor Andrew Forcehimes, head of the philosophy department at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), explained the overall operation of the department, and Professor Winnie Sung gave lectures on NTU's philosophy undergraduate and graduate programs. As in NUS, by having time to communicate with NTU philosophy students in groups, it was not a one-off event, but a stepping stone for true cultural exchange through continuous communication and meetings.
This program was conducted in a situation where the COVID-19 crisis was somewhat alleviated, but it thoroughly followed quarantine rules and carried out all schedules. A total of 23 participants, including leading teachers, assistants, and students, prepared various things to make the program more substantial through group meetings and general meetings in advance, as a good opportunity to introduce Korean philosophy and culture abroad. We prepared an English presentation to introduce Sungkyunkwan University and College of Study to the members of the university, had time to build up prior knowledge to understand Singapore and University of Exchange for a short period of time, and held a meeting after the event to share our thoughts on overseas philosophy and culture exchange. By researching and presenting Singapore, NUS, and NTU in advance, we were able to enhance the capabilities of our students at the University of Foreign Studies, and by experiencing Singapore's global research level, it was a foundation for them to grow into international researchers in the future.
Participants in the program said, "I had time to talk to students in person, so I was able to understand the actual culture of Singapore." , "Through conversations with local students, I thought that if I could clearly identify and develop the points (media content, tourism) that foreigners are attracted to our culture, I could promote Korea more widely." "It was good to be able to harmonize and interact with various classmates and understand the facilities and system of Singapore University." He left his impressions.
Professor Park So-jung, who is planning to conduct overseas exchanges and other foreign exchange universities, said, "I think it was a good experience of overseas exchange opportunities for students who didn't have opportunities.I hope this program will be given regularly and more students."
The video program held between 3 nights and 5th, will be mounted on the website of Sungkyunkwan University of Sungkyunkwan University.
