Professor Kang Kyung-hyun of the College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy publishes
Kang Kyung-hyun, a professor, recently published his book Toegye Lee Hwang's Philosophy-jiseon(지선) Realization and Self-Completion. This book reveals that Toegye Yi Hwang's philosophy, which was active in Joseon in the 16th century, aims to lay the foundation for moral human beings who aim to realize "jiseon(지선)" around the concept of "Li(리).“ In this book, it is said that by examining the meaning of "Li as a Mandate of Heaven," the level of understanding of Toegye-ri philosophy can be diversified, and the value-oriented nature of Toegye philosophy can be read consistently on the meaning of "Li's command.“ Furthermore, this book says Toegye believed that practicing human morality follows the order of Li(리), and that moral practice carries out moral commands originating from the human own mind. This book was published by revising and supplementing the doctoral thesis submitted in 2014. Professor Kang Kyung-hyun is currently working at Sungkyunkwan University's College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy, and is conducting research on Joseon Confucianism and East Asian Confucianism through the figures AND ideas of Joseon in the 16th century, including Toegye Lee Hwang. -

- BK21 Education Research Group of the Department of Oriental Philosophy received great response from "Essay Clinic"
- The "Essay Clinic" course, operated from March to July this year by the "3T Talent Training Research Group" (hereinafter referred to as the Research Group, Director Kim Do-il) to create future values abroad, received great response from participating graduate students. The Essay Clinic is a program newly opened by the research team to improve the level of thesis writing by participating graduate students, and was promoted in the background of the need to cultivate writing skills to express in-depth research results in a readable paper format. The essay clinic was jointly operated by the research team and the liberal arts basic education research institute (Director Park Jung-ha), and researchers Jeon Dae-seok and Hyun Nam-sook of the liberal arts basic education research institute participated as mentors. Mentors worked with the students 1:1 and raised the level and confidence of participating graduate students to a large extent under the guidance of mentors. As a result of conducting a survey of students who participated in this course, 73.3% of students answered that this course was meaningful, and 66.7% of students said they could submit corrected papers within three months. Of the participating graduate students, 93.3% later expressed their intention to re-engage and hoped to open an essay clinic continuously. Most of the respondents said that learning about the appropriateness of the argument structure was great due to the results of the essay clinic, and many responded that they received a lot of help in selecting the topic and table of contents of the paper. There were 15 students who participated in this course during the semester, two of whom succeeded in publishing in KCI registration immediately after completing this course, and the rest of the students are currently eager to publish and revise their papers. The high satisfaction of graduate students participating in this program indicates that basic writing training is desperately required not only for undergraduate students but also for master's and doctorate graduate students who have to write degree papers. The research team plans to continue to operate the "Essay Clinic" course in the future to actively support students in writing effective papers.
