The purpose of this course is to consider Korean acceptance and changes of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism from ancient era to modern period in the history of Korean Philosophy, and the process of creative development in relation to the history of Chinese philosophy.

Characterising the practical learning established as a resistence to the dogmatism of the Study of Principle, this course offers readings of Yu Hyungwon, Yi Ik, and Chung Yakyong. Students are further expected to discuss about the social conditions of late Chosun that led scholars to Shixue.

This course examines the difference between political thought of Confucianism and contemporary political thought by surveying the basic elements of Confucianism. The general government in our times is democracy. Regarding that political system, however, so many people currently discuss its negative aspects and limitations. Therefore the first thing we need to do is to perceive what the essence of democracy is. And next, We have to know why socio-polotical problems are arising in that system. Finally, on the basis of these understandings, we can find the solutions for the problems which are basically produced by modern democracy. For this, it will be very meaningful for us to study Oriental political ideology. In this class, more specifically, We will carefully deal with confucian political philosophy, Which is the subcategory of Oriental political ideology. Our goal is to know whether there is a method in confucian political ideology to complement modern democratic limitations.
