Stage 4 BK21 Project, Important Record Heritage National Translation Project
Excellent achievements in education, research, and social contribution by selecting the Humanities and Social Research Institute Support Project and the K-Academic Spread Research Institute Project.
Sungkyunkwan University (President Shin Dong-ryul) College of Study (Dean Shin Jeong-geun) recently held the opening ceremony of the "K-Academic Spread Research Center" and took the first step toward achieving its grand dream of globalization of Korean philosophy. It was launched when the Korea Philosophy and Culture Research Institute (Director Park So-jung) of the University of Foreign Studies was selected as the "K-Academic Diffusion Research Institute Project" organized by the Ministry of Education and the Korea Research Institute, and received a total of 5 billion won over five years. With this project, 50 high-quality MOOC courses can be installed on online content platforms such as Coursera to spur communication of Korean philosophy and overseas spread. This can be said to be a comprehensive result of the recent efforts of the university to study abroad, which is innovating based on traditional philosophy.
In addition, the university continues to achieve remarkable results in education and research. First of all, the BK21 project was carried out for 21 years from the first to the third stages, and the fourth stage BK21 project (business name: Translocality, Transdisciplinary Talent Training Group, general manager: Professor Kim Do-il) was selected to produce future-oriented discourse and contribute the most Korean philosophy. Through the BK21 project, the university is striving to achieve its goals of education, research, and social practice by cultivating transdisciplinary talents based on traditional research and actually contributing to solving social problems.
In terms of research, it is also showing remarkable results. Recently, Professor Kim Do-il was selected by the Confucian and Cultural Research Institute of the East Asian Academy under the theme of "Criticism and Modern Economic Research Project" in the 2021 Humanities and Social Research Institute support project by the Ministry of Education and the Korea Research Foundation. It is a project that can last for a total of 6 years through evaluation after 3 years, and the goal of this project is to establish a research stance to discover and reconstruct things directly related to modern Korea's locality, form a large-scale teaching cluster, and derive creative research results. Prior to this, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's "Korea Yugyeong Jeong Bon-hwa DB and Utilization System Construction Project" (2010-2019 (9 years), 3.24 billion won), was carried out at the Korea Yugyeong Compilation Center (Center Director Kim Sung-ki).
In addition, the university is striving for social practice of research results. The Confucian Philosophy and Cultural Contents Research Institute (Director Kim Dong-min) carried out a large project called the "Important Record Heritage National Translation Project" by the Cultural Heritage Administration for three years from 2018 to 2020, and was selected again in March 2021 (project cost: 1.65 billion won). This project conducts the planning and development of Confucian scriptures left by Korean Confucian scholars, especially Yoo Seong-ryong's relics and Kim Seong-il's ancient documents are considered essential data for studying not only Confucian culture but also traditional culture such as history, education, economy, and life. This project is expected to be an important opportunity to inform the general public of the value of national treasure and treasure-class recorded cultural heritage, as well as an opportunity for academic successors and new researchers to improve their genuineization and national competence.
"Sungkyunkwan University's study abroad is striving not only to lead Korean traditional studies but also to promote Korean philosophy to the world, and we will continue to play a key role in leading Korean universities' education, research, and social practice by taking advantage of their strengths," said Shin Jung-geun.
