- SKKU Enters Top 100 in THE World Reputation Rankings for First Time
- SKKU has placed within top 100 in World Reputation Rankings by Times Higher Education (THE) for the first time. On July 15th, THE announced the World Reputation Rankings 2017. In the evaluation, three universities in Korea were listed in Top 100: Seoul National University (45th), KAIST (81~90th), and SKKU (90~100th). Meanwhile, Harvard University ranked No. 1 for the seventh year in a row while MIT and Stanford University placed 2nd and 3rd, respectively. The THE World Reputation Rankings 2017 are based on an opinion survey of 10,566 academic scholars in 137 countries. Full analysis can be checked at THE’s website: www.timeshighereducation.com

- Seoul Castle Tour
- The Office of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy held the “Seoul Castle Walk” as a student activity on May 13 . More than 120 students participated in this event. Especially, 60 international students attended the event. Course: SKKU -> Hyehwamun -> Dongdaemun -> Gwanghuimun After the walking tour, all of the participants enjoyed Cold Noodles. “Seoul Castle Walk” is the event that divides the Seoul Castle into 4 parts and walk around it for 2 times in an year. Participants can not only look at the various historical places but also enjoy the cultural experience. Moreover, they can communicate with and make friendship with other people in the College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy.

- The office of College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy hosted an international students seminar on 29th, 30th of May. At the seminar, students can obtain information such as university policy, graduation conditions, and VISA. With mild temperature, students asked some questions without any pressure. More than 10 students attended the seminar with pizza, beverage, and guidebooks. In the next semester, another seminar will be held with more information.

- Rector of Leiden University Visits SKKU
- Dr. Carel STOLKER, the Rector of Leiden University in the Netherlands visited SKKU on April 27th (Thurs) to have a meeting with President CHUNG and SKKU representatives including Prof. Sung Jin SONG (Vice-President, Planning and Regulation Division), Prof. Dong Uk KIM (Vice-President, Academic Affairs Division), Prof. Ja Choon KOO (Vice-President, Office of International Affairs), Prof. Kyung Soo LEE (Dean, School of Medicine), Prof. Patricia Goedde (Law School), and Prof. Boudewijn WALRAVEN (Academy of East Asian Studies). At the meeting, the attendees had a discussion about expanding the boundaries of their exchange activities from legal studies, physics, and Asian studies to biomedical and biotechnology. They also agreed to hold the 2nd SKKU-Leiden Forum in October of this year. Furthermore, they shared their development plans and strategies for student exchanges. Bilateral ties between the two universities are expected to strengthen as a result of the meeting. Founded in 1575, Leiden University is the oldest public university in the Netherlands and one of the Europe’s leading international research institutions. The school has an outstanding reputation due to its proficiencies in the fields of archeology, medicine, and legal studies. It is also the only university in Netherlands that has a Korean studies and literature department.

- SKKU Holds 9th Central Asia Sungkyun Writing Contest
- “I started to think about what can I share with others after I saw a disable student playing the flute for Arirang which he learned from a Korean volunteer.” That was a passage from Tajik State University of Commerce student Mirzoaliev Khushnud’s (25) writing for the 9th Central Asia Sungkyun Writing Contest about the subject of “True Happiness”. At the writing contest around 40 students from four countries including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan participated: Khushnud received the gold prize. SKKU holds the Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest every year in various regions like China, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and East Europe with the aim to expand Korean culture and cultivate students that can take part in exchanges between Korea and the other countries. SKKU provides full scholarships for graduate programs to winners of the event. Aidarova Aigerim who won the gold prize at the 4th Central Asia Sungkyun Korean Writing Contest received her degree at SKKU Graduate School of Political Science and Diplomacy, and is currently working as a diplomat for the Kazakhstani government. The Sungkyun Writing Contest overcame a financial setback in 2010 when SKKU couldn’t hold the event due to a lack of funding in its budget. However, with support from Hong Duk KIM, an SKKU alumnus and CEO of Ierae CS, the event was able to continue since 2011. “I would like to provide continuous support so that the Sungkyun Writing Contest can get bigger and bigger,” said Mr. Kim.

SKKU College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy had a 'Rim Edward K.' Scholarship award ceremony at 11:00 am on April 11. At the ceremony, Prof. Shin Jeong-Geun(Dean of College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy) and Edward K. Rim(Law) present scholarship to Hwang Jun-Ho and Jang So-Hyun. The scholarship students received a direct scholarship certificate directly from Edward K. Rim. Attendees also had time to communicate with former beneficiaries, including Edward K. Rims and professors of the Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy.
'Rim Edward K. Scholarship' is a scholarship fund for scholarship and research funding donated from Edward K. Rim(university graduate student) in June 2007,This scholarship is a scholarship system that supports 50% of tuition fee for each student and it is a special scholarship for a student who is selected as a scholarship student based on the circumstances and GPA of the student.The two students who received the scholarship received a scholarship of about 1,700,000 won, which is 50% of the tuition fee. -

- SKKU has proved to be a ‘Global Top University’
- Beyond one of the renowned universities in Korea, SKKU has proved to be a ‘Global Top University’ by placing high in evaluation rankings. Recently, SKKU placed 13th in the ‘Asia University Rankings 2017’ by Times Higher Education, while ranking 1st among Korean comprehensive private universities. The Times stated that “from continuous development, SKKU is leading changes among Korean higher education institutions.” SKKU declared a ‘New Challenge Project’ last year in order to step forward and become a globally renowned university. This project includes action plans to be placed in the Asia top 10 and World top 50 from competitions with international universities. SKKU is strengthening its networks with research-oriented universities of the world, such as expanding joint forums with top engineering schools in the US. This year, SKKU plans to hold a join forum with the University of Minnesota in the field of Nano and Physics and SKKU-PKU forum with Peking University, China. The President of SKKU, Kyu Sang CHUNG said “I am very happy to see these results which represent SKKU’s hard work over the past years. Through the ‘New Challenge Project’, SKKU will focus on developing its core strategy and becoming a world renowned university.” Since Samsung Foundation joined SKKU management in 1996, the university has shown rapid development. Nowadays, SKKU is working on education innovation with Samsung to cultivate the most talented engineers. Also, many convergence programs and systems are in the process of development according to the needs of the 4th industrial revolution era.

- SKKU is Named No.1 Korea Comprehensive Private University by THE Asia University Rankings 2017
- SKKU has placed 13th in Asia University Rankings 2017 by Times Higher Education, while ranking 1st among Korean comprehensive private universities. SKKU received a total of 60.2 points with the composition of points as; Learning Environment: 56.0, Research: 55.5, Citations: 66.5, International Outlook: 39.6, Industry Income: 88.9. Meanwhile, Seoul National University received 66.1 points, while Korea University and Yonsei University got 52.8 points and 48.8 points respectively. In particular, SKKU received great recognition among universities in Korea in the area of Citations (Research Influence) by having 66.5 points, followed by Ulsan University (60.8), Seoul National University (58.8), Korea University (49.2) and Kyunghee University (48.5). One thing to note from this evaluation is that many Chinese universities received improved results. The editor of THE stated that “as a result of concentrated investment over the past 10 years, many Chinese universities including Fudan University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University have become distinguished. If Chinese universities can secure more outstanding faculties, their research performances, as well as internalization activities, will become more developed.”

- Freshmen Orientation ‘Shin Bang Rye’: Together with the Spirits of Old Scholars
- 200 freshmen including international students participated in SKKU’s traditional welcoming orientation ‘Shin Bang Rye’, held at Social Sciences Campus from March 4th ~ 5th. ‘Shin Bang Rye’ is a traditional freshmen orientation stemming from the Chosun Dynasty, where new comers can learn about the education curriculum, campus life, and expected behavior. The event that commenced during the ‘Shin Bang Rye’ ritual process are as follows: Al-Sung (commemorative rites in front of Dae-Sung-Jun), Sang-Eup-Rye (formal greetings between seniors and freshman students), Shin-Bang-Rye (welcoming party by sharing food), and Myun-Shin-Rye (initiation ceremony where senior students provides various tasks to freshmen). “We wanted to create a unique and fun freshman orientation environment where all seniors and juniors can participate in the event without a solemn atmosphere”, said student Bo Yeon PARK (Dept. of Korean Languages and Literature), president of the student association ‘Chung Ryang’ which led this unique event. Karel SETNICKA, a foreign exchange student from the Czech Republic also expressed her feelings as “I believe this traditional event provides good opportunities to think about relationship-oriented campus life and to have a mature sense of fellowship.”
