- SKKU Holds South Asia Sungkyun Writing Contest
- The South Asia Sungkyun Writing Contest was held in Bandung, Indonesia on Oct 25th, 2017. A total of 40 students from various countries including Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and more participated in the event. The theme of the contest was ‘Dreams’ and Prof. Kyong Hwon KIM explained, “We chose the subject of ‘Dreams’ by hoping that the Sungkyun Writing Contest would be a stage of dreams for foreign students who long to go to Korea.” Azimatul ALIFIYAH from Universitas Gadjah Mada received a gold medal by writing, “I have many dreams and I believe I can achieve one of the dreams if I try my best and don’t give up. Using my Korean language skills, I would like to become a writer who promotes Korean culture to Indonesia.” The silver and bronze medals went to Pimpaka SONSEE (Thailand) and Khansa ZUYINA, respectively. SKKU will provide full scholarships to SKKU graduate programs to those students who received the award. Ja Choon KOO, the Vice President of International Affairs, said, “The Korean wave is recently sweeping Indonesia, and we will support the Sungkyun Writing Contest to become one of the main cultural events promoting Korean culture and Hangul.”

- Dept. of Philosophy Holds an International Conference, ‘Philosophy between the Past and Future’
- The SKKU Department of Philosophy will hold an international conference with the theme ‘Philosophy between the Past and Future’ from Nov. 7th to Nov. 10th, under the support of the SKKU CORE Business Unit. The conference will mainly deal with the idea of time, ‘the Past and Future.’ There are several lectures that will catch people’s attention: ‘Future of work and its temporality in the Age of 4th industrial Revolution’ by Prof. Jong Kwan LEE (SKKU), ‘Environmental Destruction and People's Engagement from Minamata to Fukushima: Some lessons for the Anthropocene’ by Prof. Nobuo Kazashi (Kobe University), ‘Does History have its Reason(s)?’ by Prof. Philip Buckley (McGill University), and ‘From History to Theory and back’ by Prof. Petr Specian (University of Economics, Prague).

- 2017-2 College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy 'Rim Edward K. Scholarship' award ceremony
- SKKU College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy had a 'Rim Edward K.' Scholarship award ceremony at 11:00 am on October 27. At the ceremony, Prof. Shin Jeong-Geun(Dean of College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy) and Edward K. Rim(Law) present scholarship to Choi Jung-Ho and Yoon Ji-Young. The scholarship students received a direct scholarship certificate directly from Edward K. Rim. Attendees also had time to communicate with former beneficiaries, including Edward K. Rims and professors of the Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy. 'Rim Edward K. Scholarship' is a scholarship fund for scholarship and research funding donated from Edward K. Rim(university graduate student) in June 2007,This scholarship is a scholarship system that supports 50% of tuition fee for each student and it is a special scholarship for a student who is selected as a scholarship student based on the circumstances and GPA of the student.The two students who received the scholarship received a scholarship of about 1,700,000 won, which is 50% of the tuition fee.

- SKKU Ranks 200th In U.S. News & World Report's 2018 Global University Rankings
- Harvard University received the highest score in the U.S. News & World Report's "2018 Global University Rankings." As American universities swept the top rankings, American public universities became more prominent. According to the U.S. News & World Report, an American media outlet that specializes in college rankings, Harvard University ranked 1st in their global university evaluation, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, and the University of California (UC) at Berkeley. Among the top 10 universities (with 3 schools sharing 10th place), there are 10 American universities and 2 universities in the UK, including Oxford University (5th place) and Cambridge University (7th place). The strength of American universities is already known, but notably, 6 American public universities, including UC Berkeley and the University of Washington (10th place), ranked among the top 20 schools. The evaluation was conducted on 1250 famous universities in 74 countries. By country, there were 221 American universities, 136 Chinese universities, 76 Japanese universities, 73 British universities, and 58 German universities. American universities also placed 1st in most of the 22 major field rankings. China's Tsinghua University (64th place overall) ranked 1st in the field of computer science and engineering, showing rapid development in Chinese higher education. In Asia, the National University of Singapore ranked 43rd, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore ranked 55th, the University of Tokyo in Japan ranked 57th, and Peking University in China ranked 65th. In Korea, Seoul National University ranked 123rd, KAIST ranked 198th, Sungkyunkwan University ranked 200th, and Korea University ranked 274th. The U.S News & World Report says, "Rankings are determined based on Clarivate Analytics' science and technology analysis service, universities' global research reputation, publications and conference performance, etc."

- SKKU Ranks No.2 in Korean University Rankings by Joong Ang Daily
- SKKU was named No.2 in Korean University Rankings by the Joong Ang Daily, followed by Seoul National University. Out of 61 comprehensive universities in Korea, the Joong Ang Daily evaluated the universities’ performances based on 33 criteria, including number of citations, scholarships, and employment rate. SKKU received huge recognition mainly for its support to faculty members and students. Last year, the school offered a total of 3.62 billion won in research expenses to faculty members, while giving 3.93 billion won of scholarships to students. SKKU is also well-known for publishing many research articles in international journals. Sung Jin Song, Vice-President of SKKU’s Planning and Regulation Division, said, “SKKU has been making investments for research and education, and we now see its results in our high employment rate and potential Nobel prize awardees like prof. Nam Gyu PARK at the Department of Chemical Engineering.”

- College of Confucian Studies in SKKU ranks Top in deparment of philosophy ranking by JoongAng Daily. On 8th Sep, JoongAng Daily annouced that Korea University Rankings, comparing departments of universities with each other. With Korea University and Konkuk University, College of Confucian Studies in SKKU ranks top group in the department of philsophy among the 67 philosophy in other universities. College of Confucian Studies obtain the top level grade in students' employment rate(2nd), scholarship rate per tution(3rd), professors' disseratation quality(3rd), and professors' publishing rate(1st).

- SKKU Ranks 111th in the THE World University Rankings, Rising from 137th Last Year
- Sungkyunkwan University ranked 111th in the THE (Times Higher Education) World Rankings this year, rising from 137th last year. SKKU also rose to 3rd place in the ranking of domestic universities in Korea. SKKU scored 54.1 points in teaching (rising from 53.7 points last year), 55.1 points in research (50.6 points last year), 69.5 points in article citations (66.5 points last year), 93.7 points in industry income (88.9 points last year), and 44.7 points in international outlook (39.6 points last year), showing a steady upward trend in the overall evaluation index. Kyu Sang CHUNG, the President of Sungkyunkwan University, said, “For the past several years, SKKU has been devoted to creating synergy through the mutual growth of education and research by supporting integrated research and recruiting world-class scholars as professors to introduce a global-standard education system. We will spare no effort to become a world-class university.” SKKU is implementing creative convergence education, such as multidisciplinary approaches and specialized academic-industrial cooperative education, that will lead the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In particular, SKKU is expanding academic-industrial courses of study, such as convergent foundation projects, fusion capstone design, and integrated team field training in order to connect students’ creative business ideas to enterprises. Also, in cooperation with small businesses, SKKU created excellent results by releasing about 20 commercialized products and submitting more than 30 patent proposals every year.

- 2017 Second Semester Sungkyunkwan University International Student Entrance Ceremony
- The Sungkyunkwan University International Affairs Division (Vice President: Jachoon KOO) held the 2017 second semester entrance ceremony for international undergraduate students at 1:00pm on August 26th in the 600th Anniversary Hall, Joo Byeong Doo International Hall. 350 out of a total of 406 new students attended the ceremony. At the ceremony, Hee Cheol CHAE, Director of International Student Services, and Sa Wee MA, Vice President of the Chinese Student Association, each celebrated the new students’ admission through a congratulatory speech, and Ji Hyun PARK (Business, 17), the representative for new students, and all new students in attendance swore an oath to lead a sincere university lifestyle. After the first part of the entrance ceremony was over, for the second event the new students were divided into LC classes to greet each other, receive information about the school system, and participate in recreational activities. In his congratulatory address, Director Hee Cheol CHAE encouraged the new students by saying, “You were all selected as students with excellent grades and now you have entered Sungkyunkwan University at the end of a fierce competition. Here at Sungkyunkwan University, you will learn and become proficient to challenge the world with confidence.”

- Successful Completion of the 2017 Summer Farewell Party for Graduating International Students
- The Sungkyunkwan University International Affairs Division (Vice President: Ja Choon KOO) held the 2017 summer graduation ceremony and a farewell party for graduating international students on Friday, August 25th at 6:00pm on the 5th floor of the International Hall. A total of 237 international students, including 147 undergraduate students, 55 Master’s students, and 37 Ph.D students, were awarded their diplomas at the 2017 summer graduation ceremony. 120 graduating students and their families attended the farewell party, where they spent a meaningful time congratulating each other on their hard work and graduation and sharing their warm connection with each other. Vice President Ja Choon KOO congratulated the graduating students by saying, “Today, all of you have received your diplomas after crossing the Pacific Ocean and studying hard during all this time. Now you will return to your home countries, but we are one family under the large roof of Sungkyunkwan University. We at Sungkyunkwan University will celebrate and support your first steps toward a new beginning in our society.” The graduating student representatives, Ph.D student Nawab Muhammad Faseeh Qureshi, and Master’s student Gerke Sabrina Desiree, each gave a valedictory speech. Gerke Sabrina Desiree stated the graduating students’ feelings by saying, “Although we faced barriers such as language problems while attending classes, after many sleepless nights we were able to overcome them and stand in this honorable position today. Let’s become brilliant global leaders in every nation of the world.”

- Sungkyunkwan Univ. Graduate School of Confucian Studies host the 17th opening festival on June 17, 2017. At the opening festival, Jeong Geun Shin(Dean of the College of Confucian Studis and Eastern Philosophy) and 4 representatives of professors attended the festival. With more than 20 students, attendees enjoyed the festival such as experiencinng the traditional program.
